Peace. Peace in your heart, in your mind and in your spirit. This is something that is hard to get in the world right now. We have created all of these ‘things’ to free up our time and make life easier, but instead they only serve to bring anxiety and stress. So, what is this peace we keep looking for? Peace of mind is defined as: A mental state of calmness or tranquility, often associated with freedom from worry and anxiety. It is about experiencing inner contentment regardless of external factors. (Berkeleywellbeing.com)
That actually sounds pretty awesome! I rarely feel calm, and when I do my mind tends to fill up the quiet space with concerns, stresses and tasks that I need to get done or have put off for too long. Do you ever feel that way? Like your mind just will not shut up and let you relax? The world would have you drown out your disquieting thoughts with Doom Scrolling on your phone or mindlessly binge-watching Netflix, but Jesus told us of another better way.
In John chapter 14 verse 27 Jesus spoke:
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
A special peace He left us. This verse came in the middle of a talk He was giving his disciples about the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit of God was to come and BE the peace in our hearts and minds. Think about that for a moment. This is what the world would distract you from, the peace of God in your heart. Give your stress and your worries unto the Lord and his Holy Spirit, it is easier than you might think. You can find that peace within you by putting the device down and spending time in worship or meditation, and if you happen to fall asleep? Maybe God knew you needed the rest, so trust in Him.
Take some time after you’ve read this to rest in His Spirit. Dedicate a few minutes to listen to what God has to say to you and rest in Him. He is here with you right now; arms open wide and waiting to take away your worry and anxiety, replacing it with His peace and tranquility. But you have to let Him.
